Description

Parenteral formulations and delivery systems are of importance for the administration of an increasing number of drug molecules such as small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides and protein drugs.

Parenteral formulation types range from aqueous solutions to sophisticated formulation concepts such as lipid or polymer based delivery systems enabling extended drug release and or targeting to specific tissues.

Target groups

Formulation scientists, line and project managers, research and development scientists who seek insights in the various aspects and concepts of parenteral formulation, drug delivery and targeting.

Objective

This course will provide information and insights about the different parenteral formulation and delivery concepts.

In the first part of the course, basic principles and requirements for parenteral formulation development for small and large molecules will be introduced. In the second part, depot formulations for extended and controlled release will be presented. In addition, new concepts for parenteral drug delivery and targeting will be discussed.

Speaker

Rainer Alex

F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG

Dr. Rainer Alex, studied Pharmacy the Eberhard Karls University at Tübingen. After completing his doctorial thesis in Pharmaceutical Technology at the LMU Munich he received a research fellowship by DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and was a Post Doc at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin, USA.

He joined F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd in Basel, Switzerland, in 1989 where he held various local and global positions in the area of Pharmaceutical and Analytical R&D. In his current position he is responsible for Preformulation and Drug Delivery in Pharma Research and Early Development at the Roche Innovation Center Basel.

He is a founding member of the APV Focus Group Drug Delivery and from 2006 – 2018 he was a member of the APV Executive Board.
He was a lecturer in Life Science Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) from 2002 – 2012 and served as member of the scientific program committees for the successful PBP World Meetings held in Barcelona 2008 (chair) and in Malta 2010.

Dr. Bernd Riebsehl

Novartis AG

Dr. Bernd Riebesehl has been Distinguished Fellow & Senior Technical Project Leader in the Pharmaceutical Development Parenteral & Topical Dosage Forms of Novartis Pharma AG, Basel, Switzerland since 2008.

At Novartis he is leading the Parenteral Technology Platform Nanomedicine and the early technical development of parenteral drug products.

Externally Dr. Riebesehl has been serving as Advisory Board Member of the European Society of Clinical Nanomedicine, and chaired drug delivery sessions for the Section Drug Delivery of International Association for Pharmaceutical Technology (APV).

He completed his thesis in Pharmaceutical Technology at the Technical University of Braunschweig.

1992 he started his industrial career at Lilly Forschung GmbH in Hamburg leading several teams for preformulation, early phase development and formulation development. In his role as Research Advisor in Pharmaceutical R&D he has led several initiatives enabling the formulation of poorly soluble drugs.

In 2007 he became Director of Pharmaceutical Development at Speedel Experimenta AG, Basel.
